‘Sari-sari’ stores flourish in the countryside

The ubiquitous “sari-sari” stores or the small neighborhood variety store in the barangay is flourishing not only in Bataan but in other areas outside Metro Manila as well.

Teresita Estibar Magtanong, information officer of Department of Trade and Industry in Bataan, said that the top three registrants for business name registration for January 2024 are “sari-sari” stores, building rentals, and food establishments.

For January 2024 the applicants for BNR provincewide totalled 1,139 of which 741 are new registrants while 348 are for renewal. Last year of the same month the registrants reached 1,475. “Lower po ngayon kasi mas marami na nag-apply online,” Magtanong explained.

Going back to “sari-sari” stores, did you know that a recent report of analytics startup Packworks, which tracked down information from over 270,000 sari-sari stores nationwide, showed that sales of sari-sari stores increased by 21.2 percent from the P6.6 billion recorded in 2022. In 2023 the variety stores sales climbed to P8 billion. The products that had the highest sales are instant noodles, ready-to-heat products, recipe mix and ready-to-cook goods.
